It’s September. I dropped my kids of for their first day back at school earlier today and there was a ‘freshness’ or dare I say a ‘chill’ in the air. I can be in denial no more. Autumn is fast approaching and I must come to terms with it.
I’m not ready to pack my beloved summer wardrobe away yet so I’m doing the next best thing to tackle the colder mornings and evening, I’m layering the hell out of my outfit! If right now you are having visions of of Mr Michelin Man which, by the way is 120 years old (crazy right?) worry not I promise you that you will look nothing like him with these layering tricks and they will allow you to wear your summer favourites for longer which is also a plus for me. Keep scrolling down for lots of inspired layering sure to make you excited for the season ahead.
How to Layer Your Outfits Like a Pro
Add an extra layer around your shoulder or waist
This is great to tackle the colder mornings and evenings. Having a denim jacket or jumper with you will allow you to be prepared for when the sun goes in.
A roll neck will work under most clothes
Just make sure it isn’t too thick/chunky. The last thing you want is to look bulky. Why not try it under your favourite sleeveless top, shirt or summer dress?
Mix up outerwear textures and lengths
Layering outerwear can work wonders particularly when it’s too hot inside but cold outside. Try layering faux fur over a denim jacket or a trench over a blazer for a look that looks considered rather than frumpy. No one better than the layering queen Maja Wyh for amazing inspiration on outerwear layering.
Wear jeans or trousers under your favourite dresses and skirts
I really like doing this and use this kind of layering in the spring as well as autumn. I would recommend sticking to a skinny or straight-leg style, rather than a flare to minimise looking bulky.

I’m all for a big scarf and tights to drag the life out of my summer wardrobe #stayclassymama
Absolutely. This year though I’m proposing swapping the tights for a pair of trousers or jeans. What do you reckon?
Layering up is my favourite thing about the Autumn/Winter but I’d never thought about a faux fur over a denim jacket but in my head it looks cool already x #StayClassyMama
Oooo I did this by accident last week, we were camping and i had not packed sufficient cold and wet weather clothes so I had layered up. Not in quite such a pro fashion, but for once I’m going to pretend I was just being uber cool. #StayClassyMama
This weather is mental one minute cold then hot so need to learn how to layer X #stayclassymama
Great tips. I’m surely going to miss those cold days as layering my clothing was my favorite of Autumn and Winter season and of course to hide those extra weight that I gained. Now that we heading into Spring her in South Africa – I need to start getting my lighter clothing out of my cupboard #Stayclassymama
I usually just add a cardie but will try some of your other tips! #stayclassymama
This is the only way to dress over here at the moment as the mornings are getting very chilly but by midday the sun is burning hot again. The downside is having to carry all the extra layers you had to take off! #stayclassymama
No downside. Just wear them around your waist or over your shoulders
