The Stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St Nicholas soon be there.
I grew up in Portugal and so, just like in France, the tradition was not to hang Christmas stockings for Santa to fill them with small gifts but instead to leave your shoe by the Christmas tree. I know you are probably thinking that shoes are too small to fill with presents but they didn’t get filled. Instead the presents were piled up next to each shoe. We went through the whole ritual of placing our shoe by the tree before we went to bed on Christmas eve and I remember lying in bed trying to listen out for father Christmas’ Sleigh! Oh to be a child…
Since having children though, and because my husband is English, we have adopted the Christmas stocking tradition at my house and I love it. Of course we all have one and given the variety of beautiful and stylish stockings you can get nowadays I display them proudly as part of our Christmas decorations.
Of course before you fill the stockings you must find the perfect one. I love this large-size, pure wool, Fairisle-knit stocking from Woolovers. I love that it is all-natural and oozing festive cheer. Oh, and it’s got bobbles on! That for me is just the booze on top of the Christmas pudding!
So now that we have the perfect stocking lets fill it with some very stylish gifts under £10.
