Homemade Hummus

This is a family recipe that I picked up from my lovely mother in law – who not only is Lebanese but also an excellent cook (see what I did there? I’m hoping this will get me some brownie points).

I can guarantee you that once you try this hummus recipe you will never again eat shop bought hummus. This recipe is super simple to make and most importantly absolutely delicious!

Homemade Hummus Recipe

Serves 6-8

Ingredients

  • 2 x 400g cans of chickpeas
  • juice of 2 lemons
  • 1 tbs tahini (sesame paste)
  • salt to taste
  • tsp ground cumin (plus a bit extra to dust)
  • paprika
  • extra virgin olive oil

Method

Rinse the chickpeas well under cold water and put them in the food processor. All the tahini, lemon juice, salt and ground cumin. Turn on the food processor.

If the mixture is too thick, add a little bit of water to loosen it up. When the mixture is fully mixed and smooth, tip it into a serving bowl. Dust with a bit of ground cumin and paprika and drizzle with olive oil before serving.

Variation: You can add 2 garlic cloves crushed to this recipe if you wish. I normally leave it out because my children prefer it without.

Enjoy!

  1. I love a bit of homemade hummous, although I don’t always nail the quantities just right and sometimes balls it up. I’m blenderless at the moment though so this one is going to have to wait unfortunately. #foodiefriday

  2. I absolutely love hummus, and it’s so easy to make! I had no idea, but next time we want it I will definitely make it instead of buying it. I’ve always got chickpeas in the cupboard.x #foodiefriday

  3. Ooh, never put cumin in my hummus before, I will give it a go. Love mine really garlicky and have given my daughter a taste for it too – no unsuitable vampire boyfriends will be seducing her! #stayclassymama

  4. I happened to be watching Celebrity MasterChef the other night and one of the challenges was to make hummus and I was thinking then, “Ooh I bet homemade hummus is nice!” Thanks for the recipe #stayclassymama
